Both Aidan and I first got heavily involved with real steam at the Lavender Line in East Sussex, where we both (Aidan first by a couple of years) made it up to Passed Steam (and Diesel) Drivers, where we also worked in the railways' engineering department for several years. I must say that this gave us a wonderful education in the field, which has stood us in very good stead ever since. Eventually we both moved to the Spa Valley Railway, running out of Tunbridge Wells - another excellent experience. However, I (being much lazier by nature) moved to the miniature world of 10 1/4" railways (you didn't have to get out of bed so early....) whilst Aidan has stayed committed to the SVR.
Aidan still manages to find the time to run our portable 7 1/4" line for Church Fetes etc., using first of all 'Cutie', my maxi-track 0-4-2, and now his recently aquired 'Midge'. A few years ago , he also built the Hymek - a genuine Diesel Hydraulic, which has been resident at Pulborough ever since.
